Links to our other regional and variety sites are listed on the right side. Macedon Ranges, Victoria Located a short 40 minutes drive north-west from Melbourne. The vineyards and wineries in this region are found to the east and west of the Calder Highway around Gisborne, Kyneton, Glenyon, Lancefield and Daylesford to the west. It is a cool climate region with the highest vineyard, Mount Macedon Winery, at 680 metres above sea level. This is very much a boutique wine region with a significant number of wineries crushing under 20 tonnes. The focus is on quality, low yielding fruit and hands-on winemaking. This of course makes it very interesting for the wine lover, as the opportunity exists to discover superb wines made by little known producers. The Macedon Ranges region is Australia's coolest wine area, with its icy-cool climate, the vineyards of the Macedon Ranges have been uniquely suited to the production of ultra premium sparkling wine, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Traminer, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. This sprawling, hilly and windswept area extends from the Lancefield-Macedon district at its southern end to the Kyneton district to the north. It is what might be termed the sharp end of Australian cool climate viticulture. Site selection (altitude, protection from wind and spring frosts, and maximum sun interception from north and north-east facing slopes), the careful matching of site and grape variety, razor sharp canopy management and relatively low yields are all prerequisites for success. Even then success will not come every year; those few extra degrees of heat as well as extra hours of sunshine of the warmer Melbourne summers are needed to get the best results.
